Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty) Q & A

Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

By lifting droopy upper eyelids, cosmetic surgery can improve the contour of the eyes and reduce prominences, bulges, and fine wrinkles which gives the eyes a tired, sad, angry, and aged look. In cases where upper eyelid skin hangs over the eye, the peripheral vision may be impaired. With aging, there is a reduction in collagen, the support structure of the skin, which result in drooping of the skin due to loss of elasticity. Surgery removes this excessive tissue.

Bulging occurs due to an inherited tendency towards excess fat and laxity of skin. Surgery effectively removes the selected fat pockets through an incision hidden in the crease of the upper lid.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Lower eyelid surgery can rejuvenate tired eyes and dramatically improve appearance. Fatty deposits in the lower eyelid area, presenting as puffy bags, pouches and bulges, are removed. They may occur alone or in combination with the sagging of excess lower eyelid skin. This is a result of an inherited tendency toward too much fat for perfect contour and a laxity of the retaining structures.

The incision is hidden inside the lower lids (transconjunctival approach, one of the most advanced techniques) to avoid external scars. No skin is removed in this procedure. The re-contoured skin gives a natural appearance. This procedure can dramatically enhance the attractiveness and shape of the eyes for a smoother, more relaxed look.

How long does the surgery take?

Surgery takes between one to two hours depending on how much needs to be corrected. The surgery can be done under local anesthesia or full anesthesia.

Will there be scars?

Incision lines on the upper eyelid hide nicely in the natural eyelid. Lower lids have hidden incision lines because they are made behind the lower eyelid.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time is usually about one week. Any discomfort you encounter is easily controlled with Tylenol or prescription pain pills if necessary.
