Dermal Filler Migration — Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for restoring volume, smoothing fine lines, and enhancing facial features. Here at Lansdowne Aesthetic, our experienced providers use fillers to create natural, beautiful results.
But, even with the best application, it’s possible to experience a complication called filler migration, where the product moves away from the intended injection site.
Though uncommon, we want you to understand why it happens and what can be done to correct it.
What is filler migration?
Filler migration occurs when injected filler shifts from its original placement to a nearby area. Instead of staying where it was intended – such as the lips, cheeks, or undereyes – the product may spread unevenly, creating puffiness, asymmetry, or an unnatural appearance.
Why does filler migration happen?
Filler migration can happen due to imprecise placement. If a provider injects filler too superficially or in excessive amounts, it may not stay in place. Using too much filler in a single area increases the chance of the product moving or clumping.
Some fillers are softer and more prone to movement, especially in areas with frequent motion like the lips.
Natural facial movement, skin thickness, and even external pressure (such as rubbing or massaging the area) can influence how filler settles.
If you receive filler from someone with inadequate training or a lack of familiarity with facial anatomy, you have an increased risk of migration.
How do I recognize filler migration?
Signs of filler migration can include:
- A puffy or swollen look in areas surrounding the injection site
- Uneven or lumpy texture
- Blurred borders (especially noticeable with lip fillers)
- Asymmetry between the treated and untreated sides of the face
If you notice these changes, schedule a consultation at our office to discuss your concerns.
How do you fix filler migration?
The good news is that we can often correct filler migration. Depending on the situation, we may recommend:
Hyaluronidase treatment
If the migrated filler is made of hyaluronic acid (the most common type), an enzyme called hyaluronidase can safely dissolve the product to restore a natural appearance.
Adjustment or reinjection
In some cases, small corrections with additional filler can help rebalance the area.
Waiting it out
Some fillers naturally break down over time. If you’re experiencing only minimal migration, we may wait and see if the excess product dissolves.
How can I prevent filler migration?
The best way to avoid filler migration is by choosing an experienced provider, such as those at Lansdowne Aesthetic Center, who understands facial anatomy and uses careful, conservative techniques.
Less is often more. We recommend subtle enhancements as they tend to look more natural and carry a lower risk of complications. Lansdowne Aesthetic Center specializes in safe, natural-looking Botox® and filler treatments.
If you’re concerned about filler migration or considering cosmetic injectables, our team can help you achieve beautiful results while prioritizing your safety.
