XERF® vs Sofwave™: Which Skin Tightening Treatment Is Better?

XERF® vs Sofwave™: Which Skin Tightening Treatment Is Better?

If you’re noticing looser skin, fine lines, or a little less firmness in your face or neck, read on to learn more about the nonsurgical methods for improving your skin offered here at Lansdowne Aesthetic Center.

XERF® and Sofwave™ both use energy to stimulate collagen and improve skin firmness, but they work differently and target different concerns.

So, which one is better? The answer depends on your skin, your goals, and the type of improvement you’re seeking.

How does XERF work?

XERF uses radiofrequency energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin. That controlled heat stimulates collagen remodeling, which can gradually improve skin firmness and texture.

One of the benefits of XERF is its ability to treat multiple layers of tissue. Our providers customize the treatment based on the area being treated and the amount of skin laxity you have. We recommend XERF for areas such as the face, jawline, and neck.

Results are gradual as your body generates new collagen. Some patients notice an improvement in firmness over time, with results continuing to develop following treatment.

How does Sofwave work?

Sofwave also uses energy to stimulate collagen growth, but it delivers ultrasound energy at a specific depth within the skin. The treatment targets the mid-dermal layer, where it can trigger a collagen-building response.

We commonly recommend Sofwave for facial skin tightening, but it can also improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Treatment is relatively quick, and most patients can return to their normal activities afterward.

XERF vs. Sofwave: Which should you choose?

Neither treatment is automatically better for everyone.

XERF may be a good option if your primary concern is overall skin laxity and you want a treatment that can be customized to address different tissue depths. Sofwave may be appealing if you’re primarily looking to improve mild-to-moderate laxity, fine lines, and skin texture with minimal downtime.

We consider your skin quality, the amount and location of laxity, your desired results, and whether a nonsurgical treatment can realistically achieve those goals.

It’s also important to have realistic expectations. Energy-based skin tightening can improve firmness and stimulate collagen, but it doesn’t replicate the results of a facelift or neck lift. For more significant skin laxity, Dr. Yaqub Baraki may recommend surgery to provide a more noticeable and lasting change.

The best treatment is ultimately the one that matches your anatomy and goals. A consultation with our team at Lansdowne Aesthetic Center can help you determine whether XERF, Sofwave, another nonsurgical option, or surgery makes the most sense for you.
